UK Government Plastic Ban 2023
UK Government Plastic Ban 2023 – What You Need To Know
The UK government has introduced new legislation banning single-use plastics. This law comes into effect in October 2023 and will affect a wide range of businesses. It forms part of ongoing effort to reduce plastic waste across the UK.
History of UK Government Plastic Bans
Global attention on plastic pollution has increased over the last decade. In response, the UK government has passed several pieces of legislation. In 2015, the The Single Use Carrier Bags Charges (England) Order made charging for plastic carrier bags mandatory. Scotland, Ireland, and Wales had already introduced similar laws.
In 2021, the minimum charge increased from 5p to 10p. As a result, single-use carrier bag usage dropped by 95%.
Plastic straws have also faced legislation. In July 2021, the government banned plastic straws, which encouraged the widespread use of bamboo and metal alternatives. At Taipec, we now supply a successful range of bamboo straws to meet this demand.
The 2023 Plastic Ban
Building on previous bans, the government introduced The Environmental Protection (Plastic Plates etc. and Polystyrene Containers etc.) (England) Regulations 2023. This law further limits single-use plastics in daily life. It also aligns with broader goals to introduce circular economy principles and reduce the environmental impact of plastics in the UK.
What Is Included in the Ban?
The 2023 law primarily targets:
- Plastic plates and cutlery
- Plastic balloon sticks
- Expanded and extruded polystyrene food containers and cups
The law takes effect in October 2023, giving businesses nine months to adjust. The ban applies only to takeaways and does not cover shelf-ready pre-packed items or raw meat. Lawmakers designed it this way to avoid overlap with existing legislation.
What Is Not Included?
The law focuses on single-use plastics for ready-to-eat food. Therefore, it does not apply to pre-packed items. The government has confirmed there are no exemptions, even for medical reasons. This wide-reaching law may significantly impact the services industry.
